Juneau Mountain Rescue meets at least once a month year-round for field-training sessions as well as twice a year for overnight sessions . Training sessions can take place on rock, water-ice, or nearby glaciers. Team members are encouraged to supplement their outdoor and rescue mountaineering skills. Rescue work is demanding and JMR volunteers are expected to maintain top physical condition.

The directors and senior team members decide when new members have the expertise to participate in actual rescues. Team Qualifications are based on members' performance at group field training sessions, overall experience, and actual performance in rescue operations.
